(17 Jan 2001) Mandarin/Nat Aiming to demonstrate that it could hold a safe Olympic Games in 2008, Beijing has been showing off a crack police unit of highly trained officers. At their training centre on the outskirts of Beijing, members of the unit punched, kicked and yelled through displays of martial arts, showed off their weapons techniques, simulated a hostage drama and destroyed a fake bomb with high-pressure water cannon. The unit was formed in June 1995 amid government efforts to modernize and beef up China's security forces to deal with rising crime. China has also strengthened its military police and anti-riot forces which handle internal security. In 1989, Chinese leaders turned to the army to crush pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, killing hundreds, in part because Beijing lacked well-equipped anti-riot police. It was the first time the Special Police Brigade had allowed foreign journalists to see its officers in action. The visit, partly organised by officials handling Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics, comes as the city gears up for an inspection visit next month by the International Olympic Committee. Police officials said they were confident Beijing could hold a safe games. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Now 40,000 Beijing policemen are in full strength to work for the Olympic bid and work the international Olympic bid inspection in February." SUPER CAPTION: Liu Wei, Beijing Public Security Bureau spokesman They brushed off concerns that Islamic separatists from China's restive western region of Xinjiang or followers of the banned Falun Gong sect, who often protest in Tiananmen Square, might disrupt a 2008 Olympics in Beijing. One official said foreign terrorists were the greatest threat. A commander of the 100-strong crack police unit - the only one of its kind in Beijing - expressed confidence that China's intelligence-gathering capabilities would get advance warning of any planned terrorist act. He said they had contacts with overseas police forces and had visited anti-terrorist police in Britain. During their martial arts display, female police officers hurled their male colleagues to the floor and pretended to kick and elbow them in the stomach. With tyres screeching, police cars pulled up outside a building where officers pretending to be hostage-takers had holed up. Officers shimmied up drain pipes to the top of the building, where they attached ropes. One officer then walked face-down down the building, his body perpendicular to the wall. Another swung in through a window, and together officers brought the hostage drama to an end. During a bomb defusing exercise, an officer dressed in a protective suit took a suspicious package out of the back of a car and placed it in a bomb-proof container. A cannon firing a high-pressure jet of water later blew the package up. The Chinese authorities hope that these displays will help convince the International Olympic Committee that the country is ready to deal with any terrorist or security threat.
